Best Christmas Markets in Germany
Visiting Germany this year and want to check out some Christmas markets? You’re in for a treat!
I lived in Germany for some time and the Christmas market season was definitely my favorite time to be around!
There are plenty of them all over, but I consider these the best ones!
Top Christmas Markets in Germany
Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt
Held in the city’s main square, this Christmas market dates back to the early 1600s.
The market is famous for its traditional wooden stalls that offer an array of holiday goodies, including the iconic Nuremberg gingerbread (Lebkuchen) and spicy sausages (Rostbratwurst).
The market features a postcard-perfect setting with its centuries-old churches surrounding the square.
As a tip, if you happen to be around at the right time, make sure you catch the opening ceremony led by the Nuremberg Christkind. It’s a lively tradition that kicks off the festivities! (dates vary each year so check the city’s calendar!)
Dresden Striezelmarkt
Dresden Striezelmarkt is one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets (it’s been around for over 585 years!).
Located at Altmarkt Square, it’s renowned for the spectacular Christmas pyramid and the giant candlelight arch.
The market is named after “Striezel,” a German Christmas cake that’s synonymous with the holiday season.
Munich Christmas Market
Munich offers a fantastic festive experience right at the Marienplatz and offers views of its historic town hall.
What makes this market stand out from the crowds isn’t just its beautiful setting, but also the giant Christmas tree that towers over it and its carousel.
Here, you can try lots of delicious Bavarian treats like potato pancakes and Würstl.
Stuttgart Christmas Market
Spanning three city squares, the Stuttgart Christmas Market is known for its beautifully decorated huts, topped with regal angels and whimsical winter scenes.
With over 280 stalls, you’ll find something special, whether it’s local crafts or mouth-watering Christmas treats.
Stuttgart’s market is famous for its blend of tradition and innovation, featuring live concerts and thoughtful artisan gifts.
You’ll also find an ice skating rink and carousel (it’s one of the best Christmas markets in Germany if you’re traveling with kids).
Bremen Christmas Market
Set against the backdrop of Bremen’s picturesque Town Hall and Roland Statue, the Bremen Christmas Market features almost 170 stalls that offer everything from unique gifts to warm chestnuts and traditional “Klaben” cake.
What makes Bremen’s market different from other is that it offers everything other Christmas markets do, but with a seafaring heritage added into the mix.

Known for its vibrant Hanseatic history, Lübeck’s Christmas Market is set at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Old Town.
You’ll find everything from traditional craft stalls to gourmet specialties like marzipan, all set in a medieval ambiance that will make you feel like you traveled back in time.
You’ll love seeing Lübeck’s Gothic buildings illuminated by festive decorations and another must is entering the forest where both kids and adults can meet Santa!
